LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures closed higher Thursday, supported by inflation concerns in Europe, as well as worries about inflationary pressures from an extended rise in crude-oil prices. Gold for August delivery rose $4, or 0.3%, to $1,542.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures shook off weakness in Asian trading hours to turn modestly higher Thursday, gathering some steam after European leaders signaled a possible interest-rate increase on inflation concerns. Gold for August delivery added $1.10 to $1,539.80 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. (5713.TO) and Sumitomo Corp. (8053.TO) said Thursday that test drilling has confirmed deposits of gold, silver and antimony at their jointly held Monte Cristo mine in Alaska. Sumitomo Metal Mining, which operates the Pogo gold mine in Alaska about 60 kilometer west of the Monte Cristo mine, is aiming for annual gold production of 30 tons under its mid-term business goal.

SYDNEY(MarketWatch) -- Australian gold producer Newcrest Mining Ltd. has cut full year production guidance due to a power failure at its mine in Papua New Guinea and other site disruptions, the firm said in a statement Thursday. Full year gold production is forecast at 2.7 million ounces, down from 2.82 million ounces, while copper production and cost guidances are unaffected, Newcrest said.
