EXPERIMENT: SIT AND REACH TEST

AIM

To find the correlation between male and female students in reaching forward along the sit and reach box as far as possible to allow measurement of the flexibility of the hamstring muscles (posterior thighs).

EQUIPMENT

The test apparatus is a specially constructed box (12 inches X12 inches X12 inches with a 21inches long scale attached to the top). The level of the feet should be at the 9 inch mark or 23 cm mark on the scale.

SUBJECT

Select 15 male school students and 15 female school students who are in the same age in any level of education in the school.

VALIDITY

Logical validity has been claimed. The AAHPERD sit-and-reach test has been validated against several other tests, and coefficients ranging between 0.80 and 0.90 have been found.

RELIABILITY

0.70 or higher

NORM

PROCEDURES

  1. The student sits on the floor (without shoes) and places his or her feet flat on the side of the sit and reach box where the scale is set at 9 inches or 23 cm.
  2. The feet are placed shoulder-width apart and one hand is placed on top of the other so that the fingertips of each hand are even.
  3. The student slowly reaches forward four times along the scale keeping the palms down and legs straight.
  4. The fourth reach is held while the distance is recorded.
  5. The test administrator can place a hand lightly on the knees to remind the participant to keep the knees straight.

SCORING
